Breast implant removal may be performed for several reasons, including implant leakage or rupture, capsular contracture, or the patient’s desire to change the size or shape of the implants.

Breast implant removal may be necessary to correct other problems which can occur with implants such as the implants shifting, wrinkling, sagging or being asymmetrical. The body can also have an adverse reaction to the implants sometimes and this can causing infection, bleeding, necrosis or calcium deposits. Complications are rare, but as with any surgical procedure and any procedure that involves putting a foreign object in the body, there are risks.
In the event that a breast implant removal is necessary the procedure will be done under general or local anesthesia with IV sedation, just like the breast augmentation procedure. The incision will be made under the breast or around the nipple usually and the implants will be carefully removed. Recovery is relatively quick, though you may experience some discomfort, swelling and bruising
